Languages
Communicate effectively in multicultural settings.
Languages have always been a passion of Jean-Marc. He grew up in the German-speaking region of Switzerland. As a child, Jean-Marc spoke a Swiss German dialect from the canton of Basel-Landschaft and learned the standard High German in school. In school, he also learned French, Latin, and English for several years, covering a wide range of literature and linguistics. He spent a year as an exchange student at a high school in the United States, by the end of which he had earned an American high school diploma. Later, he decided to make languages the focus of his studies at the University of Basel, majoring in English linguistics and literature, with minors in German linguistics and German literature along with a pedagogical component that qualifies him to teach these languages in higher education in Switzerland (i.e., "Oberlehrer"). As part of his program of study, Jean-Marc spent a year in Edinburgh, Scotland, teaching German language and conversation at a local college. Today, as a citizen of the United States and a 25+ year resident of Tallahassee, Florida, English has effectively become Jean-Marc's primary language.
Travel
Help learners experience the world.
Travel has taken Jean-Marc to different corners of the world over the years. Between graduating from high school and entering higher education, he traveled through Australia, including stops in Sydney, Perth, and Queensland's Gold Coast featuring the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. On the way back, Jean-Marc stopped in Thailand for a few weeks, saw the floating markets of Bangkok, and trekked through dense jungle vegetation in the Chiang Mai region. Later, while studying at the University of Basel, he had the opportunity to attend a summer program at BoÄŸaziçi University in Istanbul, Turkey, where he learned about the Turkish language and culture and visited world-famous sites around town with the local students serving as teachers and tour guides. Before moving to the United States, he and his future wife traveled to Kathmandu and survived a dangerous bus ride through the foothills of the Himalayas to Pokhara. From Nepal, they flew to Northern India, watched their reflection in the wading pool by the Taj Mahal, and saw funeral pyres on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi. In contrast to this eventful and exciting trip, they spent two weeks of careless bliss on a small island in the Maldives on their honeymoon.
Music
Engage learners through art and play.
Music is one of Jean-Marc's favorite ways to connect with people. Inspired by his mother's voice and piano playing, he was an enthusiastic singer in his childhood. As a teenager, he bought a guitar from a street musician. Over the years, he taught himself to play the instrument and made many friends as a busker in the streets of Basel and other European cities. Jean-Marc's guitar has accompanied him on many travels and has opened the doors to the hearts and minds of locals and tourists alike. Whether it was casual singing around a campfire on a beach, gigs in pubs and bars, or performances at music festivals, music always offered great opportunities for him to share his culture with others as they would trade songs from their home with him. Jean-Marc wrote his first song, Adieu, at 16, inspired by the moment he said goodbye to his family and left home for his first adventure abroad as an exchange student. Jean-Marc kept performing and occasionally writing songs, and almost 40 years later, he released his first album of original songs called From the Heart, which is available on most streaming platforms.
Martial Arts
Resolve conflict through leadership.
Martial Arts provide a balance in Jean-Marc's life that includes physical, mental, social, and spiritual components. As a kid, he trained and competed in Judo, which provided a great outlet for extra energy and helped him deal with schoolyard bullies. In his twenties, Jean-Marc studied Wing Tsun in Europe. The system, taught in the lineage of Leung Ting and Ip Man, offers an efficient and effective approach to ending physical altercations swiftly and decisively if they can't be avoided. After moving to the United States, Jean-Marc was introduced to Aikido and ultimately joined the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU) led by Mitsugi Saotome Shihan. What attracted him to this martial art is its philosophy of harmonizing opposing forces and seeking win-win outcomes where the aggressor is disarmed without suffering any physical or mental harm. Jean-Marc currently trains at the North Florida School of Aikido in Tallahassee.
